Hockey Lessons For n00bz: Hat Tricks Part II

DC Sports Nexus ---- Sunday, November 6, 2011

Here are a few different types of hat tricks that exist in the NHL. People are always looking for something to happen in 3's in hockey so they can make up a new version of the hat trick.

Hat Trick (3 Goals)

This is the real version, where you throw your hat on the ice. Wayne Gretzky had 50 of these.

Natural Hat Trick (3 Consecutive Goals, No Scoring In Between)

In 1952 the Blackhawks Bill Mosienko somehow did this in 21 seconds. (Wiki)

Shorthanded Hat Trick (3 Shorthanded Goals)

A "Natural" version of this type of hat trick has rarely happened, and never in the NHL. (Deadspin)

Gordie Howe Hat Trick (1 Goal, 1 Assist, 1 Fight)

The man himself only had 2 of these in his career. (NHL)

Mario Lemeuix Hat Trick (1 Goal, 1 Assist, 1 Radiation Treatment)

The treatment was for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. (The Puck Report)

Legwand Hat Trick (1 Goal, 1 Assist, 1 Child Born)

Named after it happened to David Legwand in 2009. (On The Forecheck)

Sasha Hat Trick (1 Goal, 1 Assist, 1 Offensive Zone Penalty)

This is not a real thing and you can probably insert a player on your favorite team in place of Semin. (Capitals Kremlin)

Rat Trick (2 Goals, 1 Killed Rat)

In 1995 Florida Panther Scott Mellanby killed a rat in the locker room prior to a game with his stick. He then went out and scored 2 goals in the game, which teammate John Vanbiesbrouck called a rat trick. The fans really liked it and started bringing fake rats to games and throwing them on the ice after Panthers goals. The NHL changed rules based on this which means now a penalty can be called on the home team for throwing things on ice, except during a hat trick. (Sports Illustrated)

Bat Trick (Killing A Bat)

In 1999 at a Green Bay Gamblers junior hockey game a bat flew into the arena and the players killed it with their sticks. PETA got mad, so the team ran a Bat Trick promotion with fake bats to raise money for charity. (Ehrl The Pearl)

The Quintella (1 Even Strength Goal, 1 Power Play Goal, 1 Shorthanded Goal, 1 Penalty Shot Goal, 1 Empty Net Goal)

Also known as "The Cycle" Mario Lemieux is the only player to ever accomplish this. (Wiki)

Wiki had some other made up hat tricks on there that didn't seem very cool but you can check them out if you want. (Wiki)
