Tom Wilson Was Trending, Back To The Future!

DC Sports Nexus ---- Monday, May 13, 2013

During Sunday night's Washington Capitals playoff game, rookie Tom Wilson lost a skate creating one of the funnier scenes of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs as he struggled to get to the bench on one leg (cool GIF here).  The play caused "Tom Wilson" to start trending locally on Twitter.

So why were some people confused about this?

The Sports Junkies In The Booth With Joe B And Locker

DC Sports Nexus ---- Friday, February 1, 2013

During Friday night's Washington Capitals vs Philadelphia Flyers contest, the Sports Junkies Eric Bickel and Cakes joined Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin in the booth to promote their new show Table Manners that is going to be on CSN.

Caps fans, to say the least, were outraged, voicing their anger on Twitter.  There were hundreds.  Here are a few:

EB started off by putting his arms around Joe B during the interview.  He then screamed into the mic:

"WE NEED SOME OFFENSE WHERES THE OFFENSE WHERES OVI!!!"
EB Puts his hand around Joe B's neck

He then grabbed the mic out of Joe B's Hand and talked about why he was underdressed:

"THATS BECAUSE IM WEARING A DIAPER...YOU SEE HOW HIGH THESE GUYS ARE!"

The Junkies stayed in the booth for the game call.  While Cakes tried to do his best announcer impression, EB continued to think outside the box talking about the best part of their new show:

"AND WE DRINK, DON'T FORGET THAT, WE'RE DRINKING!"

Locker tries to get back to real life, but EB doesn't let it happen.  After talking for a second about the show, EB brings up drinking again.

"I WAS COMPLETELY HAMMERED BY THE END OF THE TAPING!"
EB Grabs the mic from Joe B's hand

Cakes threw in some zings while Joe B sounded upset and disappointed saying "Ay yi yi"

"I HAVE OFFERED TO MASSAGE BROOKS LAICH'S GROIN JUST TO GET HIM BACK!"

Joe B kept saying "Easy, Easy" while he was telling the story afraid what would come next.  Then Locker had a few comments semi-jokingly.

"I'm also glad you guys have about 30 seconds on the air" and We just lost some viewers".

Then Joe B brought the subject of wine back up, all while throwing in some Junkies lingo "sillies".

"Have you tasted any sillies at the Palm"

Then when closing it out, the Junks talked about how they may not be perfect on camera, to which Locker threw in a zing.  "Don't worry you guys have already proven that" Then EB finished with:

"THERE ARE NO RULES, JUST DRINK MORE!"

Overall, it probably did not turn out as well as it could have.  I'm a big Junkies fan so I'm biased.  I loved it.  But as seen above and by Twitter searching, not many did.  I'll still be watching Table Manners. LOVE THE JUNKS!

Meet Caps Basketball Peeps & Watch Baseball

DC Sports Nexus ---- Tuesday, June 26, 2012

Next Tuesday, July 2nd, the Washington Nationals are hosting a "Ignite Your Nattitude Tweet-up" for fans on Twitter.  I'm sure it will be nothing compared to the RMNB Parties, but it should be fun nonetheless.

That's great, Nationals, blah blah.  But we are taking the opportunity to piggyback off of someone else's group tickets/party event (like usual) to hang out with other Caps fans at the ballpark.

Plus, this will give you the reader, a chance to meet some of the writers from the DC Sports Nexus.  I will be there along with baseball writer Dru (Caps fan) and hockey writer Camilla (Caps fan) as well.  We would love to hear your thoughts on our writing, suggestions, etc as well as talk NHL Draft and Mike Ribeiro and Coach Mystery McBean.

So come meet us at the ballpark!

Details:
  • You buy tickets here for $20 each, plus fees turning it into more like $25 each.
  • Tickets include $6 Credit for Concessions
  • The game is Tuesday, July 3rd
  • The game starts at an odd time, 6:35pm
  • The Nats are playing the San Francisco Giants that night
  • Seats are decent, Outfield Seats, not in the upper deck
  • Post-Game Fireworks
  • Brolos are welcome
Some of us are going to get there around 4:30, so tweet us @Dru90 @TheDugsSports and come find us most likely at the centerfield barwalk!

Return Of The NBA & Hockey On Twitter

DC Sports Nexus ---- Sunday, December 25, 2011

The NHL is great.  I never realized it before, but hockey is great and the games are fun to watch.  Because the sport is not something that most people in America play growing up, the sport is very much less popular than basketball.  However, you can see with attendance numbers that people enjoy going to NHL games just about as much as they do to NBA games.

Now Twitter is pretty terrible.  At any given time the trending topics are awful.  If a topic is trending it means that a majority of people are talking about those items.

In the DC area specifically, in the case of sporting events, or big national news, these topics actually tell you what people are focused on in the area.  When nothing is happening then a movie on BET will be trending, or something stupid like #whosyourbabymomma and #thingswhitepeoplesay.  But if something happens like Tim Tebow leads a comeback or a dictator dies, those will pop right up.

I found it interesting in Washington DC at 1pm on Christmas Day that the following was the list of trending topics:

Every single one of those is either an NBA player, coach, or team.  There is no Christmas trending.  There  are no stupid hashtag trends like #whatifjesuswasindian which had been earlier in the day.  All NBA.  And the local team the Washington Wizards aren't even playing.

Later in the game an NBA Ref was trending and an NBA fan.  (Joey Crawford & Spike Lee)

(I believe in this area the NBA as a whole is more popular than the Washington Wizards, so if the Wiz were playing they wouldn't get ALL the topics either)

That got me thinking.  Would there ever be a day in DC when the entire trending topic list would be the Caps or the NHL?  Definitely not in the regular season, even if it was opening day on Christmas.  I'm skeptical that even if the Caps were playing a Stanley Cup game on a night where there were no other sporting events that they would get all the TTs in this area.

What are your thoughts on this topic?  I'd sure like to see an all Caps trending topics at some point.  I'd also like them to get to the Stanley Cup to see what happens...and they could win too...that would be nice...

Week In Review & Super Follow Friday #FF 7

DC Sports Nexus ---- Friday, November 25, 2011

The week starts Friday night and ends Friday morning...

Weekly Summary:

After losing on Saturday to the Leafs and having lots of talk about the future of Bruce Boudreau and Alex Semin, the Caps pulled off two wins at home to ease everyone's minds. After Semin was benched he came back the next game with a goal. Joel Ward was also scratched for a game because he was late. The Caps also called up defender Dmitry Orlov (D-O) from Hershey this week.

I am starting to recognize all of the players by number now, as well as seeing penalties happen in real time. I feel like I'm running out of things I don't know, and I'm becoming more of a fan than a bystander. That means I get bitter when the Caps suck, which wasn't happening at first. People are talking hockey with me at bars, like I'm an expert or something.

Thanks:

Thanks to everyone who is a fan on Facebook and a follower on Twitter. I also have a Tumblr which I am figuring out how I am going to use. Thanks for answering my questions too. You should read some of the in depth responses people are writing. Very helpful. The 140 char answers help too! And special thanks to those people who are sharing posts on all the social networks!

Week In Review & Super Follow Friday #FF 6

DC Sports Nexus ---- Friday, November 18, 2011

The week starts Friday night and ends Friday morning...

Weekly Summary:

The Caps lost 3 out of 4 this week and are in a real slump. The Caps beat the Devils in Jersey, then lost the next night to the same team at home in overtime, picking up a pity point. Then the Caps traveled to Nashville & Winnipeg for two terrible offensive games and two losses. Luckily, or Sadly, I'm not sure which, the Caps continue the game every other day pace into next week.

From a personal standpoint something is starting to happen. Something odd. Somebody asked a question on Twitter about a NHL player injury. This player was not on the Caps. However, I somehow knew the answer. A few minutes later someone mentioned a NHL player, also not on the Caps, and I was passing on their Twitter name within seconds.

Also mark down the date. Thursday, November 17th. The day I finally was able to tell apart Locker & Joe B's voices. 17 Games!

Thanks:

Week In Review & Super Follow Friday #FF 5

DC Sports Nexus ---- Friday, November 11, 2011

he "week" is Friday night - Friday morning...

Weekly Summary:

The Caps ended up going 1-2 for the week and are falling off the amazing pace I had gotten used to. After dominating the Hurricanes, the Caps played 2 bad games in a row against the Islanders and the Stars giving up 10 goals in the 2 games (Both Neuvy & Vokoun at fault). Backstrom was awarded a 3rd star of the week but other than that, nothing amazing happened.

I feel like my hockey knowledge is improving each week. I notice more and more things that are going wrong, and I am becoming more upset when the team loses because I can now see some of the mistakes they are making.

Thanks:

Week In Review & Super Follow Friday #FF 4

DC Sports Nexus ---- Thursday, November 3, 2011

Weekly Summary:

Oh no! ANOTHER LOSS?! Whaaaaaat?! That makes 2 Fridays in a row that the weekly review includes a loss. Even in their win it was pretty dicey and the Caps baaaaarely pulled it off. I'm starting to think the Caps aren't gonna win every single game they play.

Mandatory "Ovi was benched" mention...

Somehow I know less players on the roster now as compared to last week. With the injuries and the callups I'm getting quite confused. Also, while I THOUGHT I knew what icing was before I started this blog, I didn't really know what icing was...so I have to watch out for other things that I think I have mastered. The questions will continue after each game. Keep answering them for me and helping me out!

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who passes along the site via Twitter, Google +, NOW ON FACEBOOK, and whatever other crazy sites these kids are using these days. Tumblr. What! Thanks to everyone who answers questions via Twitter & in the comments.

Week In Review & Super Follow Friday #FF 3

DC Sports Nexus ---- Friday, October 28, 2011

Weekly Summary:

The best way to sum up this week of Caps hockey; They won a game, then started their own mini-offseason 4 day vacation of boredom, then finally played another game. The Caps picked up their first loss of the season to the Oilers (who I believe they don't play again) to go to a still impressive 7-1.

Yes, the quest for the perfect season is over. Caps fans should panic, cry, and stop watching. If this team isn't gonna win 82 games, then what is the point?

From a new fan standpoint, I'm starting to pick up more of the game. I believe I know the entire roster, and I even know 2 guys who are on the minor league team that have been called up at some point this year. Still need to work on my penalty vision as I can only spot about 5% of all penalties without the announcers and refs telling me.

Thanks!

Thanks to super-hockey blog Backhand Shelf for the love, as well as Spector's Hockey. And thanks to everyone who passes on links on twitter/facebook/etc! Also thanks to everyone who answers my post-game questions in the comments and on Twitter. I still need more help!

Week In Review & Super Follow Friday #FF 2

DC Sports Nexus ---- Friday, October 21, 2011

Another week (Sat-Fri) and another 3 victories for the Washington Capitals. For those keeping score at home that means the Caps are 6-0! I think I have now heard of 95% of the roster, and I could probably name a good 10-12 players!

If you haven't noticed yet, after each game I put a few observations along with questions in my recap. Yes some of the questions are jokes, but there are always some serious hockey questions in there. Remember to help me answer them in the comments or on Twitter! Thanks to the many people who already have! I'm figuring out this crazy game, but need lots more help.

This past week I was able to go to a game. I rocked the red, as well as rocked the shock (Shock Top). I saw 3 solid Caps wins, a few Ovi goals, and a machine gun barrage of 3 goals in less than 3 minutes. I saw some bad penalty calls and saw an announcer go crazy in the booth wanting to throw down the gloves with the ref (Locker on the non-double minor in the Flyers game). Another good week.

Thanks to the boss man Ted Leonsis and Ted's Take for herding people to this new blog (even though it was to the lame Weird Al thing), as well as super-blog Japers' Rink. Hopefully some people come back!

And @eduktor42 pulls off the tweet of the week, to Bill Simmons

Week In Review & Super Follow Friday #FF

DC Sports Nexus ---- Friday, October 14, 2011

What a great start to being a hockey fan. The Caps are 3-0. I now know about 8 players which is way more than the 4 I knew coming in. I learned what the trapezoid is (kind of), what the sin bin is, that overtime is 4 on 4, the truth behind lower body injuries, and much much more. Plus I'm on well on my way to figuring out the eternal question "Does Sasha Care?"

I saw a goalie suck, and then not suck. I saw a guy get his face beat in and possibly pull out his tooth. I saw 3 overtimes. I saw a shootout. I saw an Ovi goal. I saw an Ovi smash. I saw a penguin fall into spikes. I saw other penguins fall in the standings. I saw 3 behind the goal bank shot goals! I even saw a mutant! AHHHHHHHHHHHH

I still have a long way to go so keep checking back with me and help answer my questions. I don't even know who Lord Stanley is, so you can see there is work to be done...

Thanks to the super-blogs Puck Buddys, Russian Machine, Yahoo Puck Daddy, Katie Baker on Grantland, and Stanley Cup of Chowder for getting people to check out the site. Hopefully some people come back.

While the blog is fun, I'm all about Twitter. I'm usually sending out my naive thoughts during all Caps games. @TheDugsMusic ...

It's a Follow Friday #FF so for week 1 you should follow all the cool people who tweeted about the blog!

As you can see, this list was generated by searching for "capsbasketball". The search didn't pick up all instances for some reason so thats why I left you out. Yes there were lots more people who #FF'd me, tweeted with me, and told people about @TheDugsMusic so go to Twitter to check all that out.
