Score Goals Like Ovechkin, Diamonds On The Ice, Caps vs Rangers Playoff Song
DC Sports Nexus ---- Wednesday, May 1, 2013
Every season we like to have a little fun and create some songs to help pump us up for the playoffs. After about 10 failed attempts to make a Ke$ha or Kelly Clarkson song, we ended up going with a Rihanna song. Check it out.
Alex Ovechkin, Coke Commercials, The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, and Russia
DC Sports Nexus ---- Thursday, March 7, 2013
Alex Ovechkin tweeted the following, and you were like WTF!
What about Coke? Is Ovi working for them now! Good! I love Coke! I did some detective work using my favorite tool, Google Translate, which always gives me some fun stuff:
"Future torchbearers, pull submissions to Coke, ending registration within 10 days. It is too late!...The second such opportunity you will not! And join!"
Good work Google! Ovi will at some point carry the torch and says he will play in the Olympics for Russia even if the NHL won't let him or something. He also did this Russian Coke Commercial. A-Ha! (via CSN)
Now we are figuring things out. I clicked on the Coke link to find out more. Learning!

In 2014 the Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi Russia. Oh, I'm getting ahead of myself. The Winter Olympics is a thing where you shoot rifles while skiing or something.

So Coke is doing some kind of competition or looking for volunteers or something while the carry the Olympic Torch around Russia. You can go to the site and vote for your favorite person, all named Alexander. And Russian Coke spokesman Alex Ovechkin will love you if you vote...

Jeremy Roenick Doesn't Think Alex Ovechkin Works As Hard As Sidney Crosby, Is Fat
DC Sports Nexus ---- Tuesday, February 5, 2013
The DC Sports Junkies sat down with Jeremy Roenick on the premier episode of their new show Table Manners on CSN. The show is great and despite what people were saying the other night, the Junks crushed it. Check it out Tuesday nights at 11pm on CSN.
During one segment, the conversation turned to Alexander Ovechkin and his declining skillset and fatness. Roenick talked about how partying and lack of work ethic puts Ovi at a disadvantage, while talking about how hard Crosby works out. A few quotes from Jeremy:
Roenick sort of described what may be the national perception of the difference between Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. Check out what Roenick said just a few years back. Seems to have shifted gears from yelling at Mike Milbury about Ovi vs Crosby:
The show was fun, you should def check it out. Tuesday nights. 11pm. CSN.

"I think he's [Alex] let himself go. I think he stopped working out hard."
"One thing about Sidney Crosby, whether you like him or not, he will work until he has no more. He will put in the work, he will put in the time, he will do what he has to do and I think Ovechkin hasn't put in the time. And when you stop putting in the time, and you gain a little weight, I do believe he looks slow at certain times, you're worried about going out and partying, you're worried about being seen with the people, I think Ovi's gotten caught in that."

Alex Ovechkin Skating In Circles, His New Move
DC Sports Nexus ---- Thursday, January 31, 2013
The Maple Leafs defeated the Washington Capitals on Thursday night, and during the game Alex Ovechkin displayed his newest move.
Early in the game, Ovechkin came down the right side, circled around the net, and passed it off on a powerplay. Then in the final seconds, Ovi went for 2 laps before turning the puck over.
I'm getting so dizzy right now...BTW...Caps lost:

Alex Ovechkin Helps Caps Win First Game
DC Sports Nexus ---- Sunday, January 27, 2013
The Washington Capitals defeated the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday afternoon at Verizon Center with help from Alexander Ovechkin and his first goal of the NHL season on a power play. John Erskine chipped in with a surprise goal and Joel Ward scored his team-leading 3rd goal of the season in the 3-2 victory.
The Sabres struck first and the hundreds of Buffalo fans at Verizon Center made a lot of noise. But the Caps fought back and took a lead in the 2nd period that they did not relinquish.
Ovi had a chance to seal the game but the great 8 ended up hitting the post and giving the Buffalo Sabres one more chance to tie the game. Earlier in the period, Ovechkin scored what turned out to be the game winner on a powerplay, his first goal of the season.

Joe B Cracks Alex Semin Zing
DC Sports Nexus ---- Saturday, January 19, 2013
In the 2nd period of Saturday night's game between the Washington Capitals and the Tampa Bay Lightning, Alexander Ovechkin was knocked to the ice by a TB player. There was a penalty on the Tampa sid, but the refs thought that Ovi was embellishing the call and sent him to the box as well."An embellishment penalty? Is that #8 or #28. The old #28 who now resides in Carolina" - Joe BeninatiGood Ovi, Bad Ovi???
Earlier that day, on the prerecorded 106.7 preseason preview show, Joe B was tiptoing around saying that Semin was "addition by subtraction". He clearly has been waiting to drop a zing like this, and he didn't have to wait long.
Semin was signed by the Carolina Hurricanes in the offseason as a free agent.

Alex Ovechkin Crushes Rookie Cory Conacher
DC Sports Nexus ----

Welcome to the NHL Cory Conacher.
Last year's AHL MVP , made a pass and stood up watching it go. What he was not watching for was a 230 pound machine bearing down on him. CRASH.
Ovechkin hit the poor kid like a safety in the NFL. No Roger Goodell though, so no penalty. It was brutal. Check it.
Ovechkin is having a great game so far. Welcome back!

Alex Ovechkin's Very Very Very Blue Car
DC Sports Nexus ----

After practice on Friday, Alex Ovechkin came out of Kettler to sign a few autographs with his dry cleaning in hand. Unlike his teammates, Alex usually only signs a few things and then gets out of there in his awesome car (that has been documented to land more girls than me)
You can get an idea of how he gets mobbed by the fans, and how some of them even follow him to his car trying to score an autograph, while also seeing that he is a real person. He puts his dry cleaning in the passenger seat, he has to slide his big frame into that tiny car. Plus the car is just awesome.

Caps Long Line Fan Appreciation Night & Video
DC Sports Nexus ---- Friday, January 18, 2013
"Beer Here"
"How Much?"
"$8.50"
"Damn"
That was one of the several conversations I creepily overheard Thursday night at the Washington Capitals fan appreciation night. The free event at Verizon Center featured a ton of free food, a Caps practice, face painting, cheerleaders, and of course overpriced beer.
The event had about 10,000 fans attend, which is insane and possibly more than actual attendance at a Washington Wizards game.
One of the first thing fans noticed if they spent any time walking around the concourse was that many people spent a majority of the night waiting in lines. The fans arrived early and lined up outside of Verizon Center before the event began. Herding up like cattle awaiting the farmer to open the fence. And when the gates were open fans raced to another line, where they stood and awaited free food.
And why wouldn't the fans line up, the food choices were great. They had chili nachos, buffalo wings, hot dogs, Dippin' Dots, cotton candy, popcorn, soda, and more. And it was all free with just one catch. You couldn't grab a second item for your friends.
You should have seen the number of sob stories at the front of lines. Fans complaining that they could only take 1 FREE food item were coming up with all sorts of stories to try to convince the men and women at the register to break the rule for them.
My favorite instance of this was a 8 year old (ish) boy in the Dippin' Dots line. He was sent there to pick up some ice cream of the future for him and his brother, who was waiting back at his seat. When the guy in charge gave him the answer "no" the kid was not happy.
In a very loud and authoritative voice the little person stated his credentials as a season ticket holder. Obviously, he was not like the other rubes in the line. He was special. Didn't the ice cream guy understand?
The server still refused and the child was stunned. He just stared at the guy speechless with a Tony Kornheiser like "Do you know who I am" look on his face before heading back towards his seat dejected and angry. In my head I heard him exclaim, "Why I neeehhhvaaaa!" in a southern woman's accent.
Other highlights of the night included Elliot in the morning being awkward, Ovechkin saying his favorite NHL player was Dale Hunter, and Troy Brouwer dancing the Gangnam Style.

Ovechkin Collides, Is A Shake Weight
DC Sports Nexus ---- Wednesday, January 16, 2013
Back in March of 2012, Alexander Ovechkin collided with teammate Mike Knuble and was knocked out of practice. Knuble was fine and Ovechkin apparently just had the wind knocked out of him.
Well Alex was back at it again, this time colliding with teammate Marcus Johansson in a training camp scrimmage against the Caps ECHL affiliate Reading Royals on Tuesday. Ovechkin got hit in the mouth and lay on the ice bleeding after the hit. There were no serious injuries but it was a scary moment.
I know that several people didn't get to see the incident live, so I recreated it with Mojo the Dino and a shake weight that is Alex Ovechkin. This is just bizarre.

Alexander Ovechkin's Car Gets More Girls Than Me
DC Sports Nexus ---- Thursday, January 10, 2013
On Thursday afternoon, after the Washington Capitals players completed their unofficial practice, a large group of spectators migrated from the bleachers of Kettler Iceplex to the parking deck outside. A huge mass of people gathered around the players exit, but other small clusters of people began waiting next to a blue Mercedes SL65 in the parking lot horribly parked in between two hooptys.
With a license plate that read AO GR8, it was not hard to determine who's car it was, and fans were lining up next to it like it was the player himself. A group of children were playing around the car, a few girls were taking photos with the car to impress their friends on Twitter, and a group of bros lurked behind a large potted plant 30 yards from the vehicle, acting like they were just hanging out unaware of the car's presence.
The way that the girls looked at that car was a way a girl has never looked at me in my life. The fact that it was a nice car earned some friendly glances, but once they knew who the car belonged to, I could see true love in their eyes.
One girl was seriously debating hugging the car...not Ovi...his car...man I really need to win the lottery...(or I could like work hard and be successful and stuff I guess)
I didn't stick around to view the madness of Ovechkin's arrival because waiting around for a dude in a parking lot really isn't my thing. But for several Capitals fans who occupied the top level of a parking deck, the experience appeared to be quite exhilarating.

Hockey Mom Talks Ovechkin And Karlzner
DC Sports Nexus ----

Saleena is a huge Caps fan and a hockey mom. During this upcoming season she will be dishing out punishments and rewards to different players in the NHL.
I for one am glad that NHL hockey will be back. I may be in the minority, but I’d take the non-stop action of a hockey game over the grand total of about 8-minutes of action in what seems like the 11-hours of TV coverage of a football game any day.
Lucky for Caps fans, that’s not where our beloved boys in red have been spending their time. That being said, the lockout wasn’t the best thing that could happen to all Caps players. So let's find out who got ice cream, and who I sent to the penalty box without dessert:
ICE CREAM: The Great 8
As much as I wish I had a fresh approach to the player who may have benefited most from the lockout, my vote has to go to Alex Ovechkin. I firmly believe that a domesticated Ovi will be a more productive Ovi.
Spending time in his friendly Russian territory has reignited the spark that has been dwindling the past couple of seasons. Only around 200 NHL players went to Europe, and while I seriously doubt those who stayed behind spent their days eating Ben & Jerry’s and playing Just Dance 4, those who stayed active in a league of the caliber of the KHL will unquestionably have conditioning and momentum on their side.
Ovechkin’s 19 goals and 21 assists in 31 games won’t reignite the “Ovechtrick” campaign (thank God), but certainly point to the fact that he’s played good hockey while hockey wasn’t being played here.
GROUNDED WITHOUT DESSERT: Karlzner
I can only assume that those who have been playing have an edge over those who haven’t, period. The sporadic accounts I read of Carlson’s skate sessions at Kettler sounded more like the stick ‘n’ shoot sessions my son goes to when he wants to mess around with his friends. I’m placing the Wonder Twins in the “may not have done all of the summer reading” lockout camp.

Four Things To Watch For At Caps Training Camp
DC Sports Nexus ----

With the NHL in full swing and camps swiftly approaching, here's a quick look at who you should keep an eye on when you go to Kettler this weekend to observe camp (if it begins).
Mike Riberio: Also known as the new kid in town; Mike Riberio is the latest addition to the Caps roster and is, hopefully, the missing ingredient on the second line. It'll be interesting to see who Oates pairs him up with and how his chemistry with the team develops over camp.
The Goalie: Who's starting in net; The long running controversy for the Caps. Is it Neuvirth, Holtby, or none of the above? Or wil GMGM go Vokoun and decide the Caps need another "vet" in the net this season (just kidding). While Holtby was the unlikely hero throughout last seasons Playoffs, don't count Neuvrith out just yet. No matter who ends up being the "starter" with a fast paced season both goaltenders will be needed.
Tom Poti who?; The biggest shock to Caps fans was hearing (or most likely reading) that defensive defenseman Tom Poti plans to participate in training camp this week. Poti, who hasn't played since the '10-'11 season, will probably be one of the most interesting people to see back on the ice. He's one of the seven players still on the Caps who played in the '07-'08 Playoffs and his health is still a question.
The Big Three: Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Green oh my; The three remaining "young guns" will also be ones to watch this week. (assuming Backstrom is well enough to participate in training camp) Caps fans have a lot of questions about these fellas; Will Ovi get over his funk and start having 50+ goal seasons again? Can Green skate five feet without getting injured? Will Nick Backstrom be a more present force this season?
So come join us at training camp, and watch firsthand as these four situations develop. See you at Kettler!

Domesticating Ovechkin
DC Sports Nexus ---- Thursday, January 3, 2013
Taking a break from a lack of hockey to talk a little gossip...desperate times...
Alex Ovechkin is getting married. Off the market. A one-woman guy. Somewhere at One Lounge, there is a barfly crying into her apple martini, realizing she will now never get a ride in that matte-black Mercedes.
My first reaction to this news was identical to my reaction to the news that Kanye and Kim have procreated, namely an interest level somewhere between how interested I am in the mating habits of dung beetles and how interested I would be in going on a date with Sean Avery.
Unfortunately, however, this news qualified as the only hockey-related news I’m likely to get this week, which forced me to give it a bit of consideration.
This time last year, I was lamenting the fact that Ovi has become more of a celebrity than an athlete. I wished he’d spend less time behind the DJ booth and more time practicing. I said that there was no way he’ll return to top form when he’s seen nibbling on calamari and tall blondes at 3:00 a.m. the night before a game.
Well, those of us who are married know that nothing crushes a social life more than the ‘ole ball and chain…that is, until your ability to go out is tied directly to the amount of snot coming from your child’s nose.
Maybe a domesticated Ovi is just what we need. Whether it’s Maria’s feminine charms or marital guilt trips that keep Ovi in his bed the night before a game, perhaps we’ll finally get a rested Ovi who can not only score a goal from flat on his back, but also knows what brand to buy when the missus makes him stop on the way home from Kettler for feminine hygiene products.

DC Athletes Supporting Each Other, Despite Nationalities
DC Sports Nexus ---- Monday, December 10, 2012
I know nothing about international hockey. Well I really know nothing about hockey at all. I just happened to randomly be in Prague of the Czech Republic when Jaromir Jagr and the Czech team upset Alexander Ovechkin and the Russian team at the 2010 World Championships. At one point the entire town square was chanting "Russian Pigs!" I got the impression that this was a bitter rivalry, possibly not just in hockey?
Czech vs Russia isn't really the point of this post. The point is that we have players in the city supporting the players on teams of other sports in the city which is cool. Bringing countries together to support Washington DC! Here is Wizards forward (Czech) Jan Vesely rocking an (Russian) Ovechkin Shirsey. He is also making (Japanese) sushi...for some reason.
Yeah, NHL Lockout. Time for pics of basketball players rolling sushi. Fun times.
